Siarö Fort, Military fort on Kyrkogårdsön island in Stockholm archipelago, Sweden.
Siarö Fort is a granite fortress on Kyrkogårdsön island in the Stockholm archipelago, containing underground chambers, concrete trenches, barracks, and two 152-mm Bofors cannons positioned along the Furusundsleden strait. The installation was designed to house about 270 personnel and includes original equipment from the coastal battleship Svea.
Construction of the defensive fortress started in 1916 to protect Stockholm's northern waterway from attack, but was delayed by financing difficulties. Completion finally occurred in 1924 after years of challenging construction work.
The fort reflects early 20th-century Swedish military engineering, with structures carved directly into rock to remain hidden from approaching vessels. Visitors can observe how the defensive installation was integrated into the landscape.
Visitors can reach the fort by steamboat from Stockholm's National Museum pier or by taking bus 670 to Östanå followed by a ferry ride. Access may be limited during bad weather, so it is wise to check conditions before visiting.
The fort's underground network includes restored military facilities that recall when about 270 soldiers and sailors were stationed here. Visitors can see today how the garrison lived and worked in these tight underground spaces.
