Östanå Castle

Östanå Castle is a stone structure built on a hilltop overlooking a major shipping channel in Sweden's eastern archipelago. The building displays classical details typical of its period and remains a prominent landmark for boats navigating the surrounding waterways.

The castle was built between 1791 and 1794 following architect Louis Jean Desprez's design. It replaced a wooden structure destroyed during the Russian raid of 1719.

The castle embodies late 18th-century Swedish noble architecture and once housed a Swedish Prime Minister. Visitors can sense the building's connection to Swedish political history through its refined design and prestigious past.

The castle is located northeast of Stockholm and remains privately owned, so visits require advance planning. The best views are available from the water side, where maritime traffic passing nearby is clearly visible.

The grounds contain an older apple orchard still visible around the structure. This orchard reveals how the site was once used for cultivation beyond its role as a residence.
