Österåker Municipality, municipality in Stockholm County, Sweden
Österåker Municipality is a region in the northern part of Stockholm County in Sweden that includes several small towns and islands. The area covers about 550 square kilometers with a mix of lakes, islands, and neighborhoods, with Åkersberga as the main town.
The region has a long history as a trading center and was militarily important from the 17th to 18th century, as evidenced by at least three surviving castles. A former quartz mine, the Härsbacka mine, was once Sweden's largest and shows the area's past industrial importance.
The name Österåker reflects its eastern location and historical role as a trading center. Today you can see a community that maintains Swedish traditions while welcoming people from many countries, making daily life here diverse and inclusive.
The area is well connected to Stockholm by buses and a suburban train line, making daily commutes and day trips easy. Locally, you can reach the islands by car or with regular ferries, including a historic steamship from 1898.
A historic steamship ferry dating from 1898 connects Ljusterö island to the mainland and remains one of Sweden's oldest still in regular service. This unusual connection seems to carry travelers back in time while providing practical daily transport.
