Rydboholm Castle

Rydboholm is a castle in Österåker with three connected wings arranged around an open courtyard. The main structure dates from the mid-16th century and underwent numerous modifications over time, creating a layered appearance with different architectural styles.

The castle began in the 15th century as a property of the Sture family before passing to the Vasa dynasty. It held significance for the Swedish royal court and remained an important noble residence throughout the following centuries.

The castle shows how Swedish noble families transformed their fortifications into comfortable homes, adapting the design to suit their daily lives and changing tastes. You can observe how the layout shifted from defensive needs to residential comfort through its various sections.

The castle is a private residence with limited public access, as the current owners live there year-round. The surrounding grounds, including the park areas, may be partially visible from certain vantage points, but visiting requires prior arrangement.

A large English-style park from the early 1800s was created by Magnus Fredrik Brahe on the southwestern grounds. This landscaped garden reveals how Swedish nobility embraced the English garden fashion of that era, adding a layer of later design to the older fortification.
