Stegeholm, Medieval castle ruin on Slottsholmen, Sweden
The stone remains of Stegeholm Castle stand at the entrance of Gamlebyviken bay, near the current location of Västervik Municipality in eastern Sweden.
Duke Albert II of Mecklenburg constructed this defensive fortress in 1370 to protect the waterway leading to the original settlement of Västervik.
The castle ruins provide a venue for the Västervik Song Festival, an annual music event that has taken place at this location since 1966.
Visitors can reach the ruins by following Slottsholmsvägen road to number 10, where parking facilities are available near the waterfront location.
Local residents received permission in 1734 to extract stones from the ruins, while a shipyard used the remaining walls for industrial purposes.
