Stenkullens värdshus, Hotel in Schweden
Stenkullens värdshus is a large brick building constructed in 1863 located north of Norrköping near the E4 highway, operated as a hotel and inn. The structure features asymmetrical architecture with simple rooms, old furnishings, and a basement filled with family memorabilia spanning generations.
The house was built in 1863 by snuff manufacturer Erik Swartz as a summer residence with its own park overlooking the water and surrounding landscape. Following the construction of the E4 highway in 1965, the surroundings changed dramatically, yet the building endured these transformations and has operated as an inn since the mid-20th century.
The house carries the legacy of Erik Swartz, the snuff manufacturer who founded it and shaped the surrounding landscape with his passion for nature. Visitors today experience how this heritage remains woven into the old trees and quiet setting.
The house sits directly on the E4 north of Norrköping and is easy to reach from the road, marked by black iron gates at the entrance. Visitors find simple rooms and can gather in the large salon where a basic breakfast is served each morning, with views of traffic moving along the highway.
The house contains a hidden room accessed through a trapdoor on the upper floor where the family's children once played, possibly built for concealing something or someone. Current owner Maria Svensson believes the house is inhabited by invisible friends who are peaceful and keep her company.
