Växjö–Åseda–Hultsfred railway, Heritage railway museum in Virserum, Sweden.
The Växjö-Åseda-Hultsfred railway is a decommissioned train line that once cut through densely forested terrain in Småland, linking several towns together. Today it operates as a working museum with preserved rail cars and sections of track where visitors can ride historic trains.
The first section of the line opened in 1879 and connected rural communities in the region to one another. The route developed into an important link for passenger and freight traffic before eventually being transformed into a railway museum.
The railway displays original station buildings and equipment from different eras of train travel history. Visitors can observe how rural transportation infrastructure looked in the past.
Visitors should prepare for changing weather in this heavily forested region and bring suitable clothing. The ride routes are accessible on foot, though amenities are limited at the smaller station stops.
This railway was the first in Sweden to receive heritage protection, preserving an important piece of train history. This distinction came about due to the excellent condition of its original infrastructure and rolling stock.
