Lev!, Glass art installation at Umeå Railway Station, Sweden
Lev! is a 170-meter glass wall installation at Umeå Railway Station made up of 186 double glass sheets displaying images of birch forests. These photographs were captured during train rides between Missenträsk and Umeå, creating a visual passage from the station to the city.
The installation was inaugurated on November 17, 2012, during the Autumn Light festival as part of a major renovation of the railway station. This marked the reopening of the renovated Umea Central Station to the public.
The artwork honors writer Sara Lidman through recorded poetry readings and discussions about global issues embedded in its audio system.
The installation is easily accessible on foot from the station square and features heated benches where visitors can rest while viewing the work. The LED lighting ensures it remains visible and atmospheric during the long dark winter months.
The glass panels incorporate sixteen audio channels with four interactive touchpoints that trigger different soundtracks when visitors make contact. This hidden sonic dimension transforms the visual work into a multisensory experience that reveals itself through exploration.
