Novo Mesto, Regional center in southeastern Slovenia
Novo Mesto is a regional center in southeastern Slovenia located along the Krka River. The buildings spread along the riverbanks and on a central peninsula that several bridges connect with the surrounding neighborhoods.
An Austrian duke founded the settlement in 1365 as a trading post between Ljubljana and Zagreb. The town later received city rights and developed into an important market center in the region.
The city name translates directly to New Town and reflects its medieval foundation. Today you can see the old center with its church spires and rooftops sitting on a peninsula formed by the river bend.
The central old town can be explored on foot and offers several parking areas at its edge. The train station sits about a ten-minute walk from the center and provides connections to Ljubljana.
Archaeologists found more than 50 Iron Age graves in the surrounding area containing richly decorated bronze vessels. The objects show animal depictions and geometric patterns that are over 2500 years old.
