Sevnica, Municipal center in Lower Sava Valley, Slovenia.
Sevnica is a municipal center in the Lower Sava Valley in Slovenia. The settlement runs along the left bank of the Sava River, with an old core below Sevnica Castle and a newer quarter near the mouth of the Sevnična stream.
First mentioned in 1275 as Liechtenwalde, the settlement lay on the border between Carniola and Styria within the Habsburg realm. This border position ended in 1490 when the region was reorganized administratively.
The parish church dedicated to Saint Nicholas dates back to 1862 and replaced an earlier building from the 15th century. Its construction marked a turning point in the religious architecture of the area.
The settlement is accessible by rail connections to Trebnje and other regional hubs. The municipality covers 117 settlements across 272 km², so visitors should expect longer distances when moving between different parts of the area.
Four documented mass graves from World War II lie within the municipal boundaries. The settlement also hosts Lisca, a major European manufacturer of lingerie.
