Vintgar Gorge, Canyon near Bled, Slovenia
The 1.6-kilometer gorge features wooden walkways along vertical limestone walls, with the Radovna River flowing through narrow passages below.
Local photographer Viktor Gombach discovered the gorge in 1891, leading to the construction of 500 meters of public pathways two years later.
The name Vintgar originates from the German term Weingarten, referring to the wine-glass shape of certain sections of the limestone formations.
The gorge operates seasonally from April through October, with entrance tickets requiring advance online booking to manage visitor capacity.
More than 600 plant species grow within the gorge walls, creating a microclimate that supports rare flora throughout the 250-meter-deep canyon.
