Mallestiger Mittagskogel

Mallestiger Mittagskogel is a mountain peak in the Karawanks range that stands at 1,823 meters (5,980 feet) along the border between Austria and Slovenia. The summit features rough rock formations and far-reaching views across both countries and the surrounding Alpine landscape.

The mountain has marked the border between Carinthia and Slovenia since medieval times, with historical routes used by border officials and traders. These old pathways over the region served for centuries as important passages connecting the two countries.

Local mountaineering clubs maintain the network of trails and mountain huts, preserving the Alpine traditions of both Austrian and Slovenian communities.

The ascent from Gasthof Baumgartner follows trail 683 to a mountain hut at 1,639 meters (5,380 feet) and takes roughly 4 to 5 hours for the round trip. The paths are marked, though the climb is steep and demands decent physical fitness.

The final 30 meters (98 feet) to the summit require technical climbing skills because they remain unsecured. This exposed section makes the ascent memorable and challenging for many hikers who underestimate the difficulty at the top.
