Burgruine Finkenstein, Medieval castle ruins in Finkenstein am Faaker See, Austria.
Burgruine Finkenstein is a medieval castle ruin perched on a steep cliff above Lake Faak. The site offers vantage points overlooking the lake and the distant Karawanks mountain range.
The castle was first documented in 1142 when it belonged to the Prince-Bishops of Bamberg. It later served the Osterwitz noble family as a strategic fortification in the region.
The ruins display building elements from different time periods left by successive owners. Visitors can observe how the Romanesque style of the 12th century differs from the later Gothic design.
Accessing the ruins requires a short walk up a path from the village below. The grounds transform into an event venue during summer months with various cultural activities.
The western wall of the former Palas still stands at approximately 15 meters high. This substantial structure remains one of the most impressive surviving sections of the original fortification.
