Ferlacher Spitze, Mountain summit in Karawanks range, Austria
Ferlacher Spitze is a mountain summit in the Karawanks range, sitting at 1,742 meters and forming the natural border between Austria and Slovenia. From this vantage point, the surrounding Alpine landscape spreads out, with Lake Faaker See visible below in the valley.
Austrian mountaineers first explored the peak in the 19th century, establishing routes through the Karawanks for geographical investigation. These early pathways still form the foundation for today's hiking routes.
The summit holds a place in local mountaineering traditions and is maintained by regional Alpine clubs. Hikers walk through distinctive Alpine landscapes with flora and rock formations that reveal the character of the Karawanks region.
The main hiking route begins at Kopein and passes through Bertahütte mountain hut, covering roughly 13 kilometers with an elevation gain of around 840 meters. The trail is well-marked and suitable for hikers with basic mountain experience and proper gear.
In winter, the summit offers views of both Lake Faaker See and the Mittagskogel mountain while still remaining accessible for hiking. The cold months create a special time to see the region from this elevation.
