Brdo Castle near Kranj, Renaissance mansion in Predoslje, Slovenia
Brdo Castle near Kranj is a Renaissance mansion in the City Municipality of Kranj, Slovenia, set within a large estate that includes woods, ponds, and cultivated garden areas. Marked walking paths cross the grounds, allowing visitors to move through the different parts of the estate on foot.
The mansion was built around 1510, making it one of the earliest Renaissance structures in a region that was then under Habsburg rule. Over the following centuries, it changed hands several times and was gradually expanded and modified by its successive owners.
Inside the mansion, rooms display works by Slovenian artists alongside historic furniture from different periods. Walking through the interior gives a clear sense of how the building was used over the centuries.
The estate is open daily from sunrise to sunset, and the grounds are easy to explore on foot. Sturdy shoes are a good idea, as some of the paths pass through wooded and uneven terrain.
In 1991, the estate hosted a meeting between the US president and the Soviet leader, just months before the Soviet Union dissolved. It was one of the last such meetings on European soil before the end of the Cold War.
