Črni Kal Viaduct, Road viaduct near Gabrovica, Slovenia
The Črni Kal Viaduct is a road bridge spanning 1,065 meters across the Osp Valley, supported by eleven Y-shaped columns that rise about 87.5 meters at their highest point. The structure carries four traffic lanes and two emergency lanes to handle the flow of vehicles between Ljubljana and Koper.
Construction began in 2001 and finished in 2004 when the bridge officially opened to traffic. The project improved road connections between Slovenia's inland regions and its coast.
The structure connects the inland limestone plateau with the coastal lowlands, making it a practical link between two distinct regions. Locals often notice it as a landmark that visually marks the transition between different landscapes.
The viaduct is easily accessible to drivers traveling between Ljubljana and Koper. There are no dedicated viewing areas, but visitors can see it clearly from the roadside.
The Giro d'Italia cycling race crossed this bridge in May 2004, just before it opened to regular traffic. This unusual event gave the bridge brief international attention.
