Lihtenberk Castle

Lihtenberk Castle are ruins of a fortified structure located on elevated terrain near Šmartno pri Litiji, featuring stone walls and foundations that have survived centuries. Portions of a two-story palace and fortification walls remain visible, though significantly damaged by time and natural events.

The castle was first mentioned in documents in 1223 when Albert de Lihtenberc, a ministerial of the Patriarchate of Aquileia, received it from the Counts of Andechs. A major earthquake in 1511 caused significant damage and ultimately led to its abandonment.

The castle represents medieval Slovenian defensive architecture and served as an administrative center for the surrounding territory under various noble families.

The ruins stand close to Bogenšperk Castle, which later assumed its administrative duties and remains occupied today. This proximity of two fortifications from different eras creates an interesting area to explore regional medieval settlement patterns.
