Olsnitz is the administrative center of the Murska Sobota region in northeastern Slovenia. The town sits on relatively flat terrain and serves as a transportation hub for the surrounding area.
First recorded as Belmura in 1297, the settlement grew under Hungarian rule for hundreds of years. After World War I, it became part of Slovenia and briefly formed its own independent state.
The railway station holds a memorial honoring the Jewish residents deported during World War II. This monument preserves the memory of a community that once lived in this place.
Visitors can use regular train connections to reach major Slovenian cities from here. The town center is compact and easy to explore on foot.
The municipality declared itself the capital of the Republic of Prekmurje in 1919, establishing a brief period of regional autonomy.
