Goričko Nature Park, Nature park in northeastern Slovenia
Goričko Nature Park is a large protected area with rolling hills, forests, meadows, and streams in northeastern Slovenia near the borders with Austria and Hungary. The terrain features the park's typical gentle hills interspersed with forests and dotted with dozens of small villages.
The region formed millions of years ago from sediment deposits left by an ancient sea, which created the distinctive rolling hills visible today. This geological history laid the foundation for the landscape that exists now.
The numerous villages scattered throughout the park landscape feature apple orchards and vineyards that define how locals live and work on the hillsides. This traditional way of farming shapes the appearance of the region and remains central to daily life here.
The area can be explored on marked walking trails that wind through the hills and forests throughout the park. The main information center is located at Grad Castle, where visitors can get guidance about the best routes and local conditions.
The park is home to Slovenia's only native red deer population, which surprisingly survived historical efforts to eliminate it completely. The extensive network of streams and waters also shelters protected otters that live throughout the area.
