Pišece Castle, Medieval castle in Pišece, Slovenia
Pišece Castle is a stone structure built on a rocky elevation in southeastern Slovenia near the Municipality of Brežice. The castle grounds feature an English-style park with sequoia and sycamore trees, catalpa, and ginkgo, along with a spring-fed pond.
First mentioned in 1329 as 'haus Pischaetz', the castle served as a strategic stronghold for the Archbishops of Salzburg protecting their eastern Posavje territories. It became an important defensive position under their rule.
A wall painting from the early 1700s in a first-floor room depicts castles that once belonged to the Moscon family. The artwork reflects the heritage and connections of those who lived here before.
The grounds are walkable with clear paths throughout the property and views of the surrounding landscape. Wear comfortable shoes as parts of the castle area sit on elevated terrain.
The medieval name Bishaz is interpreted as 'bei der Shanz' meaning 'by the trenches', suggesting this site held military importance since ancient times. The terminology itself reveals how people understood the location's defensive role.
