Rifnik Castle, Medieval castle ruin in Šentjur Municipality, Slovenia
Rifnik Castle is a ruin on a strategic hilltop in Šentjur, rising above the Savinja region in eastern Slovenia. The site offers wide views of the surrounding landscape and still shows remains of the historical fortification.
The castle was first mentioned in 1326 under the name Reichenekk. It was later abandoned after passing through the hands of various noble families for centuries.
The ruins are part of an archaeological park that displays objects from different time periods found nearby. The collection shows how people lived in this region across many centuries.
Visiting requires good footwear and plenty of water, as the uneven terrain makes walking difficult. It is important to move slowly and be careful on the rough surfaces.
The name comes from Middle High German and combines a personal name with the word for hill. This language blend reveals the German-speaking past of this Slovenian region.
