Tajba, National nature reserve in Trebišov district, Slovakia
Tajba is a nature reserve in the Trebišov district that protects a bend in the Bodrog River with wetland vegetation covering about 27 hectares. The reserve contains shallow waters, reed beds, and floodplain forests that provide habitat for water-dependent animals.
The reserve was established in 1966 to protect a specific turtle species from extinction. This action represented an important step in conservation efforts within the country.
Local conservation groups from Košice University collaborate with environmental organizations to protect and study the native turtle population in this protected area.
Access to certain sections requires prior permission from the reserve management to protect sensitive habitats. Visitors should check in advance which areas are open and wear sturdy shoes since the terrain can be muddy and wet.
The reserve holds the largest surviving population of a native turtle species in Slovakia. Hundreds of these animals live here in their natural habitat, making it a scientific reference point.
