Comenius University, public university in Bratislava, Slovakia
Comenius University is a public university in Bratislava and the oldest and largest institution of higher education in Slovakia. The main campus is located in the city center and combines historic stone buildings with modern structures, where thousands of students from Slovakia and abroad study daily.
The university was founded in 1919, shortly after Czechoslovakia was established, and quickly became a leading academic institution. During Nazi occupation and later communist rule, it experienced periods of restriction, but recovered after 1989 and expanded to its present size.
The university is named after John Amos Comenius, a 17th-century educator whose ideas shaped European learning traditions. Walking through the grounds, you see students and teachers actively using the space, keeping alive a legacy of scholarly exchange that has endured for centuries.
The campus is located in downtown Bratislava and is easily accessible on foot from many parts of the city. The various buildings are connected by paved paths and small green spaces, making exploration straightforward, though some areas can become wet and slippery during heavy rain.
The university operates a wide range of faculties and is recognized as a pioneer in open-access publishing of research findings. This makes it a hub for spreading knowledge that is not hidden behind fees but available to everyone.
