National Theatre Košice, State theatre in Košice, Slovakia
The National Theatre Košice is a Neo-baroque building adorned with ornate plaster decorations and a distinctively shaped stage. The stage design was carefully created to provide excellent acoustic conditions for all types of performances.
Construction took place between 1879 and 1899 under the direction of architects Adolf Lang and Antal Steinhardt. The project emerged in response to the Ringtheater fire in Vienna, which highlighted the need for safer and more modern theatre buildings.
The ceiling displays four paintings depicting scenes from Shakespeare plays, adding an artistic dimension to the auditorium. These works reflect the cultural tastes of the era when the theatre was built.
The theatre offers complete wheelchair accessibility and sits centrally within the District of Košice I. Its location makes it easy for visitors to reach by public transport and explore the surrounding area.
The opening performance in 1899 showcased József Katona's Hungarian tragedy Bánk Bán. Images from the construction process were also displayed at the Paris Exposition, bringing international attention to the newly completed building.
