Luník IX, Public housing district in Košice, Slovakia
Luník IX is a residential district with concrete apartment blocks in the western part of Košice that houses several thousand people. The area was built on a small scale and now contains schools, a kindergarten, and a community center for local families.
The area was created in 1978 as a planned housing development to accommodate people in modern apartments. Its creation followed the relocation of residents from an older Roma settlement nearby.
The district is home to a large Roma community whose members speak their language, play music, and gather in public spaces as part of their daily life. The colorful murals and the way people use the streets reflect the creative identity of the residents.
The area is easily accessible by public transport and offers basic services within the district. Visitors should note that this is a lived neighborhood with regular business hours for shops and services.
The district became the focus of a significant international visit in 2021 that drew attention to the community. Since then, art projects and renovations have visibly transformed the neighborhood's appearance.
