Košice, Metropolitan center in eastern Slovakia
Košice is a large city in eastern Slovakia and the center of the region that shares its name. The settlement stretches along the Hornád River and is bordered by hills to the north and west.
The settlement received royal privileges in 1290, which strengthened its position as a trading center. Over the following centuries political affiliations changed several times, until the town became part of Czechoslovakia and later Slovakia.
The settlement has carried its name since medieval times, when it served as a meeting point for merchants and travelers crossing central Europe. Today locals gather in the pedestrian streets of the old town, where cafés and shops fill the daily rhythm.
Visitors can find information at the tourist office on the main street, which opens during weekdays. The old town can be explored on foot, and most sites are located close to each other.
Underground passages run beneath the streets of the old town, once part of the medieval fortification system. These tunnels connected different parts of the settlement and served as protection during attacks.
