Košice Castle, Castle ruin in Košice, Slovakia.
Košice Castle is a medieval castle ruin set on a hill on the edge of the old town of Košice, Slovakia. Parts of the outer walls and tower foundations remain standing, giving a sense of the original layout of the fortification.
The fortress was built around 1300 to protect the region during a period of political instability in the medieval Kingdom of Hungary. Over the following centuries it lost its strategic role and slowly fell into the state of ruin visible today.
The castle was once home to noble families who used its hilltop position to project their authority over the surrounding region. Visitors today can still trace the outlines of living quarters and defensive structures within the ruins.
The ruins are reachable on foot from central Košice via marked hiking trails, with a moderate uphill walk that takes around 20 to 30 minutes. Information panels placed around the site explain the history and layout of the fortress.
Some sections of the walls show overlapping construction phases, making it possible to read shifts in building techniques from the 14th century into the early modern period. This layering is rarely so visible at comparable sites in the region.
