Pilsko, Mountain peak at Polish-Slovak border

Pilsko is a mountain peak at the Polish-Slovak border rising to 1,557 meters with a prominent dome at its summit. Dwarf pine forests cover the upper slopes and shape the appearance of the mountain.

The peak first appeared in written records in 1721 in Historia naturalis curiosa Regni Poloniae, with Gabriel Rzączyński documented as the first climber. The area became marked by tragic events during the early days of the 1939 invasion.

On the Slovak side, there is a field altar where a priest from Mutne village holds a mass every July for local residents. The place holds meaning in the religious life of communities on both sides of the border.

The summit can be reached from the town of Korbielów via marked hiking trails that lead to a mountain hut at 1,330 meters. Come prepared with weather-appropriate gear, as conditions change quickly at this elevation.

A memorial cross on the northeastern slope honors Corporal Franciszek Basik, among the first casualties when Germany invaded in 1939. This marker stands as a reminder of the tragic opening days of the war in this border region.
