Sitno, Mountain summit near Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia.
Sitno is a summit in the Štiavnica Mountains, in the District of Banská Štiavnica, Slovakia, rising to 1,009 feet (1,009 meters). Dense forest covers its slopes, and a small observation tower stands at the top, from which several regions of central Slovakia are visible.
The top of Sitno was settled in the Bronze Age, when its height made it a useful place for defense and observation. A fortress was built there in the Middle Ages, and parts of its walls are still visible today.
In Slovak folklore, Sitno is said to shelter a sleeping army of knights inside the mountain, waiting to rise in a time of need. This legend is closely tied to the region and still comes up in local stories and celebrations.
A marked trail starting from Počúvadlo Lake winds through the forest and leads to the top, making navigation straightforward for most walkers. The final section is steeper than the rest, so sturdy footwear is a good idea.
Although Sitno is listed as a tourism office, there is no traditional visitor center at the top. Instead, the label reflects its role as a recognized tourist point in the region, where the observation tower and medieval ruins share the same small summit area.
