Horná Nitra, Tourism region in western Slovakia.
Horná Nitra is a tourism region in western Slovakia that extends along the upper Nitra River valley and covers four districts: Topoľčany, Partizánske, Bánovce nad Bebravou, and Prievidza. The river runs through the entire area, connecting towns and shaping the local landscape.
The region has been a center of settlement and power since medieval times, with strongholds like Bojnice first recorded in 1113. Over centuries, industrial towns later grew here, transforming the region economically.
The Museum of Prehistory in Prepoštská Cave shows how Neanderthals lived through stone tools and artifacts found in local archaeological sites. Visitors can see what daily life was like for early people in this region.
The region is easiest to explore via the main road running parallel to the river, which connects the main towns. Bus stops in larger towns make it possible to travel between districts.
The region contains a large animal facility housing over 300 species and serving as an important conservation program for endangered animals. Many visitors do not realize this facility also conducts research to study threatened populations.
