Michael's Gate, Medieval city gate in Old Town, Bratislava, Slovakia.
Michael's Gate is a fortified tower rising about 51 meters high in Old Town Bratislava, topped with a copper onion-shaped dome. The structure spans seven floors and combines Renaissance and Baroque architectural elements, serving as one of the city's oldest surviving buildings.
The gate was built in the 14th century as part of Bratislava's city fortifications. It acquired its current appearance with the distinctive onion dome during major renovation work carried out between 1753 and 1758.
The gate displays a statue of Saint Michael holding a sword and shield atop its dome, created by Bratislava craftsman Peter Eller. Inside, you can see historical weapons from different periods and explore the Baroque decoration throughout the tower.
You can see and photograph the gate from outside for free, while the tower's interior is open for visitors to explore. The best time to visit is during quieter periods when fewer people are around.
Hidden in the head of the Michael statue is a time capsule from 1758 containing period coins, religious relics, and documents from the 18th and 19th centuries. This concealed collection has only been revealed during occasional restoration work, making it a fascinating piece of the city's past.
