Revište, Castle ruin in Žarnovica, Slovakia.
Revište is a castle ruin perched on a narrow rocky ridge above the Hron River with surviving defensive walls and a medieval residential tower. The elongated structure stretches along the ridge with a prism-shaped tower marking its northern end.
The fortress emerged in the second half of the 13th century as a guardian of trade routes to Slovak mining centers. It fell into ruins following destruction during Thököly's rebellion in the late 17th century.
The ruins reveal how medieval noble families adapted the fortress to their needs through repeated renovations and expansions. Visible masonry shows different construction phases that developed across several centuries.
Marked hiking trails lead from Žarnovica town center upward to the ruins with reasonable accessibility for typical walkers. The town provides lodging, dining, and services that visitors can use before heading out on the trail.
The elongated courtyard stretches roughly 50 meters along the ridge, creating an unusually thin fortress design for medieval defenses. This extreme lengthwise extension was a rare adaptation to difficult terrain that shaped how the entire structure worked.
