Revište, Castle ruin in Žarnovica, Slovakia.
Revište is a castle ruin on a narrow rocky ridge above the Hron River, in the Žarnovica district of Slovakia. The structure follows the shape of the ridge from end to end, with a prism-shaped tower at its northern tip and stretches of defensive wall still standing.
The castle was built in the second half of the 13th century to guard trade routes leading to the Slovak mining towns. It was badly damaged during Thököly's uprising in the late 17th century and was never rebuilt, which left it in the state visible today.
The ruin sits above a valley long shaped by silver and gold mining, and the castle once helped control who moved through that region. Visitors today can walk along the ridge and read the different layers of stonework left by successive owners.
Marked hiking trails start from the center of Žarnovica and lead up to the ruins, making the route easy to follow for most walkers. Sturdy footwear is a good idea, as the rocky ridge can be uneven underfoot.
The courtyard of the castle is so narrow along its length that it resembles a corridor more than a typical medieval yard. This shape was not a design choice but a direct result of the ridge itself, which left almost no room to build sideways.
