Priečne sedlo, Mountain pass in High Tatras, Slovakia
Priečne sedlo is a mountain saddle in the High Tatras of Slovakia, sitting at around 2352 meters and linking the Malá Studená dolina and Veľká Studená dolina valleys. The route over it passes through steep, rocky ground, and fixed metal chains are bolted into the rock face at the most exposed sections to help hikers through.
The saddle was used for centuries as a crossing between the two valleys by herders and local traders moving through the mountains. In the 19th century, as mountain hiking grew in popularity, a proper trail was established through this area.
The crossing is well known among Slovak hikers as a demanding route that tests both strength and nerve, especially at the iron chain sections on the steepest rocky walls. Groups often pause there to catch their breath and exchange a few words before continuing the climb.
The usual starting point is Stary Smokovec, where a funicular goes up to Hrebienok and the path leads into the valley. The chain sections can be slippery when wet, so solid footwear and dry conditions make the crossing much safer.
The Teryho chata hut, reached after crossing the saddle, receives all its supplies from porters who carry heavy loads on foot up the full length of the trail. Passing one of these porters on the path, loaded with goods, is one of the more memorable sights on this route.
