Wooden articular church of Leštiny

This wooden church was built between 1688 and 1689 using traditional spruce construction with exterior wooden planks and an attached bell tower. The building preserves fine craftsmanship from that era, with the tower connected by a covered stairway.

Construction took place under the supervision of Captain Jóba Zmeškala from Orava Castle during a time of religious tolerance. The building reflects how the Lutheran community managed to create a permanent house of worship despite the challenging circumstances of the era.

The interior features decorative wall paintings and a Baroque altar that reflect Lutheran artistic traditions in Slovakia. These ornaments and designs show how much this place mattered to the people who worshiped here over centuries.

Access requires advance planning since the building is not freely open to visitors. You will need to arrange a visit by getting in touch ahead of time to coordinate your arrival.

The building received UNESCO World Heritage recognition in 2008 as part of a collection of wooden churches in the Carpathian Mountains. This honor reflects the building's status as a cultural treasure of global importance.
