Veľký Choč is an asymmetrical limestone peak rising to 1611 meters in the Liptov region. Its eastern face features sheer cliffs, while dense spruce forests cover the slopes below.
The mountain served as a crucial navigation point along the medieval trade route connecting the Danube basin to the Baltic Sea. Its distinctive shape made it an essential landmark for travelers on these ancient paths.
The mountain appeared on the reverse of a Czechoslovak banknote in 1986, marking its importance to the nation. This image became a symbol recognized across the country.
Several marked trails lead to the summit from Ružomberok, with the climb from the Valaská Dubová trailhead taking around three and a half hours. The path is well-marked, though hikers should be prepared for changeable mountain weather conditions.
