Church of All Saints of Tvrdošín, Gothic wooden church in Tvrdošín, Slovakia
The Church of All Saints is a Gothic wooden structure with separate shingled roofs over its rectangular nave and chancel, topped with a bell turret at the western ridge. The building uses fir wood logs joined without metal nails, reflecting the traditional construction methods of this mountain region.
The building was constructed in the 15th century using fir wood logs joined without nails, an unusual craftsmanship solution for the time. Major renovations between 1630 and 1635 gave it its current form and added Renaissance elements to the structure.
The interior shows Renaissance paintings and Baroque decorations, particularly a painted ceiling and decorated walls added over centuries. The pulpit from the late 1600s with Evangelist figures tells of religious traditions practiced within this space.
Access is easier during warmer months, but you will need to arrange a visit in advance during colder periods. It helps to check current opening times before your visit to avoid disappointment.
The building received a Europa Nostra award in 1993 for its restoration, later gaining UNESCO World Heritage recognition alongside other Carpathian wooden churches. This acknowledgment shows it is valued both as a place of worship and as an important example of regional craftsmanship.
