Kalište

Kalište is a former settlement in the foothills of the Low Tatras at about 924 meters elevation. The site now displays only stone foundations, two standing houses, a small cemetery, and graves of partisan fighters among coniferous forest.

Kalište was destroyed in 1945 when Nazi forces attacked and burned the settlement on March 18. The village had previously served as a shelter for partisans who resisted occupation from the surrounding mountains.

Kalište was once a small farming community where people lived simply and worked the surrounding land. Today, the preserved ruins and memorials show how the memory of these lost lives remains central to understanding the region's identity.

The best approach is a walk of about 4 to 5 kilometers from Donovaly following a marked trail through the forest. You can also drive a narrow asphalt road from Moštenice or bike along nearby forest paths from surrounding villages.

A nature trail with seventeen information boards tells the everyday stories of life before destruction, revealing details most visitors would miss. These paths connect history with the forest landscape and bring the lost village to life through personal narratives.
