Levoča, Spiš Castle and the associated cultural monuments, Medieval castle complex and religious monuments in Spiš region, Slovakia

Spiš Castle and the associated cultural monuments form a complex of a castle ruin on a hill, the medieval town of Levoča with its Gothic and Renaissance buildings, and the ecclesiastical town of Spišská Kapitula. The entire ensemble displays remnants from various centuries with defensive walls, religious structures, and inhabited urban districts.

The castle was founded in the 12th century and served for centuries as the administrative center of the Szepes region. A major fire in 1780 destroyed significant portions and accelerated its decline.

The Church of St. James in Levoča houses a remarkable late Gothic wooden altar from the 15th century that reflects the religious and craft heritage of the region. This altar displays intricate carved details that visitors notice immediately upon entering the church.

Access to the castle involves a walking path that climbs from the base of the hill, with parking available nearby. It is wise to wear comfortable shoes and allow adequate time to explore the different areas of the complex.

The altar carving in the church was created by an artist named Paul who spent years developing his craft to complete this ambitious work. This achievement shows the level of skill and patience required of medieval craftspeople.
