Szontághovo sanatórium

Szontághovo sanatórium is a medical building in Vyšné Hágy constructed in the 1930s to treat patients with serious illnesses. The structure features a south-facing facade with large windows and outdoor terraces designed to bring daylight and mountain views into patient rooms.

The building was constructed between 1934 and 1938 during a period when Slovakia was expanding its healthcare facilities. It was designed using modern construction methods to serve patients with respiratory illnesses.

The facility received protection status with identification number 706-3871/0 CHMSK, marking its role in Slovak architectural heritage.

The facility was built to hold around 200 patients and includes covered colonnades that serve as transition spaces between indoor and outdoor areas. Visitors should wear sturdy shoes since the grounds are spread across different levels and mountain paths can be uneven.

Architects integrated steel and glass to create bright interior spaces specifically designed for tuberculosis treatment. This material choice was revolutionary for its time because it reduced infection risks through better ventilation and easier cleaning.
