Brekov Castle

Brekov Castle is a medieval ruin located on a limestone hilltop in the Humenné District of Slovakia. The fortress consists of several sections of stonework with varying heights, including parts of buildings that still rise multiple stories.

The fortress was founded in the 13th century, replacing an earlier Slavic fortified site at this location. Over the following centuries, the Drugeth family controlled the castle and shaped its development.

The castle shows how people of this region once built their fortifications and defended their lands centuries ago. Walking through the ruins reveals how life was organized around the need for security and control.

The ruin is reached by a walking path from Brekov village, and entry is free. Wear sturdy shoes as the ground is uneven and there are no paved paths across the site.

The northern section contains preserved gates from the 16th century that blend Gothic and Renaissance design features. These gates show how the building style changed over time as new architectural trends arrived.
