Description
Mautstein is a mountain summit in the Prešov Region reaching an elevation of 2261 meters, with two peaks where the southwestern one stands higher. The formation rises above the Rovienková and Veľká Studená valleys and dominates the landscape of this borderland area.
History
The mountain was first climbed on July 20, 1897, by mountaineers August Otto and Johann Hunsdorfer. This early ascent marks the beginning of modern mountaineering activity in this alpine region.
Culture
The summit carries different names across the region: Mautstein in German, Hranatá veža in Slovak, and Graniasta Turnia in Polish. These varied names reflect the cultural diversity of this borderland area.
Practical
The summit lacks marked trails, but climbers can reach the top through an unmarked route starting from Świstowa Przełęcz along a wide ridge. Navigation on this route is fairly straightforward in clear weather, though basic mountain experience is needed.
