Skalisko, Mountain summit in Gelnica District, Slovakia
Skalisko is a limestone peak in Slovakia that reaches 1293 meters and features a 10-meter rock formation at its top. The mountain overlooks the Volovské vrchy range and surrounding landscapes.
During World War II, the peak represented the highest elevation under Hungarian control, with local names Baracká and Baračka still remembered from that era. The changing names reflect how the region shifted through different periods of administration.
The mountain sits between mining towns Gelnica and Rožňava, where gold and silver extraction shaped the identity of surrounding communities for centuries. This mining heritage remains visible in how locals understand their landscape and regional roots.
Several marked hiking trails connect to the summit from nearby towns, with the green-marked path from Henclová providing the most direct route. The well-marked routes let visitors choose different approaches based on their starting point.
From the summit platform, visitors enjoy a complete 360-degree view spanning the High Tatras, Low Tatras, and Slovak Karst mountains all at once. This all-around perspective reveals how these mountain ranges relate to each other geographically.
