Ľupča Castle

Lupča Castle is a stone fortress that rises on a hilltop above the Hron valley. It was built in Gothic style and sits along a historically important route between Banská Bystrica and Brezno.

The fortress was built before 1250 in response to Mongol invasions in the region. It later served as a stronghold for Hungarian kings who controlled the area.

The chapel inside shows painted wooden ceilings that reflect the craftsmanship of medieval castle lords. Walking through these rooms gives a sense of how nobility decorated their private spaces.

The castle is accessible during warmer months, but conditions and opening times can vary depending on the season. It makes sense to check current availability before visiting, especially if you are traveling from a distance.

Deep inside the fortress there is a well system connected to underground passages. These hidden tunnels gave residents access to areas beyond the walls and show the practical thinking that went into the design.
