Market Hall, budova tržnice v Bratislavě
Market Hall is a commercial building in Bratislava III featuring high-tech architecture completed in the early 1980s. It is made of reinforced concrete with glass walls, visible air and water piping systems, and a roofed structure that provides shelter for fresh food vendors and shoppers.
The building was designed in the late 1970s and completed in the early 1980s by architect Ivan Matušik as a modern approach to marketplace design. In 2002, all concrete surfaces were painted red, a change that significantly altered its original appearance.
The Market Hall serves as a gathering place where locals meet and interact while shopping for daily needs. This function reflects how the space bridges traditional trading customs with contemporary urban life in the city.
The hall features covered passages and open galleries that make it easy to move between stalls regardless of weather conditions. Temperature control, ventilation, and lighting systems maintain comfortable shopping conditions throughout the year.
It is a rare example of high-tech architecture from Eastern Europe where technical systems are intentionally exposed to reveal how the building functions. This design choice was unconventional at the time and stood apart from traditional markets with hidden pipes and utilities.
