Villa Somalia

Villa Somalia is a presidential residence in Mogadishu, situated on elevated ground near the Indian Ocean. The building serves both as the official dwelling and workplace of Somalia's president.

Construction began in 1922 and was completed in 1936 during Italian colonial rule in Somalia. The extended building period reflects the colonial ambitions of the administration at that time.

The building displays ornamental elements from the 1930s that reflect the design preferences of Italian colonial administration in East Africa. These decorative details remain visible on the façades and interior spaces today.

The location offers strategic access to both the harbor and airport. This position makes it important for governmental operations and diplomatic movements in the city.

The building became a final defensive position for security forces during intense conflicts in January 1991 in Mogadishu. This episode marked its recent history in a significant way.
