Bakhuis Mountains, Mountain range in Sipaliwini District, Suriname
Montes Bakhuis is a mountain range in central Suriname with peaks rising to 956 meters above sea level. The hills spread across roughly 110 kilometers through densely forested terrain in the Sipaliwini District.
Dutch explorer Louis August Bakhuis led an expedition to this mountain region in 1901. The mountains were subsequently named in his honor following his exploration of this remote area.
The mountain area contains numerous bird species, including the crested eagle and blue-cheeked parrot, with 378 different species recorded in the region.
The region is accessible only by boat through river routes or by aircraft via the Bakhuys Airstrip. Visitors should expect challenging access conditions and limited infrastructure in this remote location.
Scientists discovered the mineral surinamite in these mountains in 1974. The region also holds substantial deposits of bauxite, nickel, and copper.
