Coppename Bridge, Road bridge over Coppename River in Suriname
The Coppename Bridge is a road crossing spanning the Coppename River and connecting the districts of Coronie and Saramacca. The structure stretches roughly 1500 meters with a central main span of about 150 meters.
Built by Dutch construction company Ballast-Nedam and completed in 1999, the bridge represented a major step forward for Suriname's transportation infrastructure. It created the first permanent road link between two previously less connected regions.
The bridge links Jenny and Boskamp, enabling everyday contact between residents on both sides of the river. People cross regularly for family visits, business, and trade between the two districts.
The bridge has two lanes accommodating both cars and trucks, though heavy vehicles carrying export goods are subject to specific restrictions. Weather conditions may occasionally affect crossing conditions.
The bridge requires ongoing maintenance of its support plates on the Jenny side to preserve structural integrity. These regular upkeep efforts are part of keeping the crossing operational.
