Description
The Garden of Palms is a historical park behind the Presidential Palace, featuring approximately 1000 royal palm trees spread across the grounds. The space also provides habitat for tropical birds and capuchin monkeys that inhabit the area.
History
Governor Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck established this garden in 1685, ordering the planting of royal palms and opening it to residents. The park has maintained its role as green space for the city ever since.
Culture
The garden displays monuments honoring national figures and serves as a gathering place where locals come to relax and walk. The palm trees create natural shaded spots that are especially valued on hot days.
Practical
The park welcomes visitors throughout the day and features a children's playground along with shaded areas for sitting. Since lighting becomes limited in late afternoon, visiting in the morning or early afternoon is recommended.

UNESCO funded a major restoration of the garden in 2009, recognizing it as part of the city's World Heritage status. This support helped preserve the site for future generations.
