Mayadin, Administrative city in Deir ez-Zor Governorate, Syria
Mayadin is a city in Deir ez-Zor Governorate that sits on the western bank of the Euphrates River. It serves as the administrative center of its district at an elevation of about 195 meters above sea level.
The city experienced significant military events in the late 2010s when it became the site of intense fighting. An offensive operation in autumn 2017 changed who controlled the city.
The people here are predominantly Sunni Muslims who maintain strong family ties and local traditions in how they organize their daily lives. These customs shape the rhythm of the community and the way spaces in town are used and shared.
The climate is very dry and hot, with temperatures exceeding 40°C in summer and little rainfall throughout the year. Visitors should prepare for extreme heat and bring plenty of water.
A remarkable piece of aviation history connects this city to a plane crash from 1947. An aircraft that went down nearby carried a notable passenger who would later shape popular culture.
