Qasr al-Hayr al-Sharqi, Desert castle and archaeological site in Homs Governorate, Syria.

The fortified complex spans across 19 kilometers with round towers, two enclosures, a mosque, olive presses, and a sophisticated water control system.

Built in 729 CE under Umayyad Caliph Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, the castle served as a military outpost and administrative center along desert trade routes.

The architectural elements combine Roman, Byzantine, and Islamic designs, featuring high-quality limestone structures enhanced with decorative brick and stucco elements.

The site includes a visitor center, though access remains restricted due to regional conditions and ongoing preservation efforts in the Syrian Desert.

Archaeological excavations revealed an elaborate water management system with sluices that protected inhabitants from floods while ensuring continuous water supply.
